The main stages of life and scientific biography of M. M. Berezhkov, professor of Russian history at the Nizhyn Institute of History and Philology of prince Bezborodko, are outlined. The paper deals with the formation of M. M. Berezhkov as a personality and researcher, the cocncentration of his scientific interests in the sphere of the medieval history of Russia during the first period of his life and activities.
