Comprehensive preservation system of library and archival collections of V.I. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine: consistency, specificity, modernization of directions

Abstract

Aim of the work is to study the main stages of emergence and consistent development of the preservation system of library and archival collections of the V.I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine (VNLU) on various material media in order to modernize the system’s components through the influence of scientific and innovative technologies. Research methodology consists in the application of instrumental, organoleptic and applied methods. Scientific novelty of the work consists in the study of various aspects that affect the comprehensiveness of the preservation system of library and archival collections of the VNLU due to the sequence of stages, the assignment of actions for all collections, the specificity and timeliness of tasks to ensure the preservation of the most valuable documents, the modernization of the directions of this activity with the development of information technologies. Conclusions. In accordance with International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions strategy for recent years, particularly regarding the development of such a component as cultural heritage in the strategic plan of the federation, the updated preservation system of the VNLU’s collections acquires appropriate specificity respecting the most valuable documents. Thus, the main task in the preservation system is to guarantee the long-term storage of such documents, which are created on a wide range of physical media with different qualities: rag paper, parchment, leather, wax cylinders, fabric, etc. These tasks require development and timely implementation of technologically balanced preventive measures. The measures should significantly develop and specify the current system of preservation of collections, including mandatory consideration of all components of the entire complex of works, which should ensure proper functioning and preservation of the unique collections of the Library. The next stage is the digital transformation of the preservation system of the VNLU and the implementation of effective measures aimed at introducing innovative processes into library practice: photocatalytic, sorption-convection, aeroionization, filtration and air conditioning, as well as the use of 3D modulation, high-quality materials and effective fungicides for conservation of library and archival collections.
