Abstract

The article aims to analyze the materials published in the Ukrainski Visti newspaper for mentions of the term “genocide” and its interpretations, as well as efforts aimed at spreading information and condemning the genocide of Ukrainians. The research methodology considers the specific features of the functioning and development of Ukrainian émigré periodicals and their influence on the worldview of the diaspora environment through communication between the publication and readers. The novelty of the article lies in the focused attention on a little-studied topic in the history of the interpretation of the Holodomor and Soviet repressions in Ukraine as an act of genocide by the Ukrainian diaspora in the late 1940s and 1950s. Conclusions. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, the Ukrainski Visti newspaper widely covered issues related to the genocide of Ukrainians. In particular, in early 1950, when the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America was preparing testimony about the genocide of Ukrainians before the subcommittee of the US Senate Foreign Affairs Committee on the ratification of the UN Genocide Convention, Ukrainski Visti called on its readers to send their memories about their life in the USSR. This may indicate that the hearings contributed to the publication of numerous materials about the famine of 1932-1933 in the newspaper and covered them as evidence of genocide. Moreover, Ukrainski Visti became a platform for publishing materials about the genocide. For example, the memoirs of direct Holodomor witnesses who lived in Western countries in the status of displaced persons (DP) in the early 1950s were printed here. In addition, Ukrainski Visti published many materials about the activities of the Democratic Association of Formerly Repressed Ukrainians by the Soviets (DOBRUS) and other émigré organizations in Western countries, including the reports about the events where the events of the 1932-1933 famine were interpreted as genocide or component of the genocide of Ukrainians..
