Ensuring durability of expecially valuable documents of V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine:combination of different technological approaches

Abstract

The purpose of the work. Research of aging processes of especially valuable documents of the V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine on various material carriers in order to create and maintain conditions for ensuring their durability. The research methodology consists of instrumental, mathematical and applied methods, therefore it allows at the maximum possible extent to study the aging processes of the materials used in production of valuable library collections and to reveal the tasks and prospects to ensure the preservation of the documents. The scientific novelty of the work is the study of various technological aspects which affect the long-term storage of particularly valuable library documents on such media as paper (mostly rag), parchment, wax cylinders, fabric, etc. The study of the durability of the documents considers the interaction of the impact of material and biological components, type of print, writing, lifespan, providing maximum authenticity of their structure to ensure the preservation of all empirical material, if stabilization or restoration are needed. Conclusions. The research provides recommendations to ensure the durability of valuable documents on various material carriers, depending on the type of material, physical and chemical characteristics and the nature of natural aging processes. The complex interaction of various preventive, stabilization, and restoration measures to ensure the preservation of the originals of valuable library collections with the possibility of converting information into another format or on other media remains relevant.
