Publicistic works of Mykhailo Hrushevsky on the pages of weekly newspapers "Village" and "Sowing" as a source from the history of Ukrainian peasants’ and workers’ prerevolutionary periodicals

The article characterizes the period starting from the revolution of 1905, when periodicals publishing in Ukrainian language became possible on the territory of subRussian Ukraine. The stage of national press formation and establishment is illustrated. Through the examples of public weekly newspapers “Village” and “Sowing” we havere presented the history of Ukrainian workers’ and peasants’ prerevolutionary periodicals and shown how a Ukrainian historian and state figure M. S. Hrushevsky contributed to it. The analyzed publicistic materials of M. S. Hrushevsky from the column “To our readers” in a weekly newspaper “Village” provide the information on the tasks of Ukrainian workers’ and peasants’ periodicals including the development and status enhancement of Ukrainian language and the enlightenment of Ukrainian nation. Two messages of M. S. Hrushevsky to the subscribers of a weekly newspaper "Sowing" bear evidence of the difficulties of Ukrainian newspapers publishing. Besides that, presented is the historiography relevant to the subject of the article.
