Conservation measures for preservation of especially valuables documentsof V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine:examination, research, implementation

Abstract

The purpose of the work is to implement  a complex of conservation measures for particularly valuable documents of the V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine, which includes microbiological and material examinations to ensure their long-term storage. The research methodology consists in the application of instrumental, statistical and applied methods, so it allows to trace the actual physical condition of the material basis of valuable and rare documents as fully as possible and to implement stabilization operations to guarantee the preservation of these collections. The scientific novelty of the work consists in the optimal combination of non-destructive microbiological and material examination of the condition of especially valuable library documents of the V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine as a basic component for the development and implementation of modern conservation measures specifically for the examined documents in the defined conditions. Conclusions. The conservation measures developed on the basis of the conducted examinations in general include the selection of modern methods and necessary materials to restore the documents and minimize the speed of the aging processes of their material base, as well as technically and competently ensure the scientific restoration of separate copies. It is also expected to optimally combine traditional methods of restoration
of valuable documents with introduction of innovative technologies: phase storage, neutralization of excessive acidity with modern antioxidants, as well as creation of electronic insurance and reader copies in accordance with the demand of time.
