“UKRAINIAN NEWS” NEWSPAPER IN EPISTOLARY HERITAGE OF IVAN BAHRIANYI (FROM ARCHIVE OF LETTERS OF WRITER AND PUBLIC-POLITICIAN FIGURE: 1945—1963)

The goal of the article is to analyze the content of documents from the epistolary archive of the writer and public-politician Ivan Bahrianyi (1906—1963) as a source from the history of the newspaper “Ukrainian News” (1945—2000), which was published in Germany and the USA for 55 years in order to deepen the information about this emigration publication and determine its problem-thematic directions, as well as to increase the circle of those personalities who cooperated with the newspaper in the state or outside it. As for the methodology, the research is based on the methods of historical-scientific analysis, systematization, biographical, chronological, as well as source and textological methods of studying archival documents, which in turn made it possible to determine their informational structure and content. Scientific novelty. Among the materials of the epistolary archive of I. Bahrianyi, previously unknown information on the history of the newspaper “Ukrainian News” was discovered, in particular, letters about a number of cultural and organizational events, which constitute a new source base for the functioning of this publication, the main thematic areas of the newspaper’s activity were systematized. For the first time, the most complete base of the archive has been organized (letters of I. Bahrianyi and to him, including biographical information about the addressees). Conclusions. Based on the analysis of the content of the documents of the epistolary archive, which relate to the newspaper “Ukrainian News”, it was possible to reproduce little-known facts from the history of the publication as one of the main participants of the Ukrainian press movement in Europe after World War II, to systematize letters with materials about the newspaper (creation of a chronological list of letters, determination of their number, biographical references of addressees, reconstruction of a number of events and facts from the history of the publication (in particular, about the supplement to the newspaper “We will return!”), determine its role and place in the process of formation of national identity in the circle of Ukrainian emigration.
